Design is a profession that requires an individual to become a jack-of-all-trades.
Skills must be developed in communication, creativity, business, aesthetics, and technological proficiency. As an educator, it is my responsibility to bring all of these factors into harmony in a way that prepares my students for professional careers in design.
My classroom employs a variety of instructional methods, which allows students with different learning styles more opportunities to gain knowledge. I utilize lectures, classroom discussions, examples of contemporary design, software demonstrations, and individual and class critiques. By revealing these various creative processes, each person is allowed to discover a unique approach to design. Assignments are given with specific goals that broaden my students’ experiences, as well as challenge them to question, think, and invent.
Communication is vital to the creative learning environment. I encourage open dialogue between my students and myself, so that we may experience a healthy exchange of opinions. This transforms the class into more than just schoolwork. It becomes a space where ideas are nurtured and expressed, and where students are excited to participate.
I work to achieve a balance between keeping my students grounded in the business of graphic design, while fostering their creative potential. By combining passion and discipline, I hope to guide students in reaching a level of excellence necessary in today’s job market.
